Current SHAC Projects

SHAC is currently working on three projects this semester:

CPR Awareness
To emphasize the importance of CPR and make training more accessible and affordable to students.

Outreach
To develop fun and interactive ways to keep students up to date on UHC's events and services.

Social Media
To grow UHC's presence on facebook, twitter, and other modern social networks in order to better reach students.

Past SHAC Projects

Health Insurance Education
To look at ways to help students learn more about health insurance and understand their individual policies.

Online Appointments
To develop a campaign to encourage students to save time by making an appointment rather than using the walk-in clinic.

UHC Website Redesign
To provide input to the web developer on the redesign of the UHC website.

Ask the Experts Panel
In representing the voice of all University of Georgia students, SHAC has planned the Ask the Experts Panel. This is an opportunity for the Health Center staff to meet SHAC members and ask them questions. In preparations for this meeting, UGA students as well as the Health Center staff will be surveyed by SHAC in order to gather information about students' perception of Health Center Services as well as the Health Center staff's opinions on working with students.

In Sickness and In Health Series
The In Sickness and In Health Series is a monthly campus outreach program with the goal of providing health information to University of Georgia students along with information about Health Center resources. In the academic year 2004-2005, our topics for the series have included Women's Health and Sexual Health, Getting to Know Your University Health Center, Cold and Flu Prevention, Final's Stress Management, Keeping Your New Year's Resolutions, Healthy Heart Month and Safe Spring Break.

Hearing Loss Awareness - The "Safe Sound" Campaign
The Student Health Advisory Committee's Hearing Loss Awareness Campaign will be launched in the spring of 2004. We will be present at concerts and other university events, distributing earplugs and raising awareness about the danger of noise-induced hearing loss. Visit the SHAC website again soon for more information on this campaign, as well as for information on hearing loss and hearing protection.

Organ Donor Awareness
The Organ Donor Awareness project will be underway in Spring 2004. Check back for more details then.

Tobacco Policy Review
The Student Health Advisory Committee will review the University's current tobacco policies and compare it with standards at other universities. Recommendations on possible updates to the current policy will be made to the University Staff Council.

CAPS Psychologist Search Committee
When search committees are formed to find and hire new clinical staff at the University Health Center, the Student Health Advisory Committee often has a representative that participates in reviewing applications and interviewing applicants. SHAC is playing an active role in screening applicants and hiring a new psychologist for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).

Executive Director Screening Committee
After nineteen years of service as the Health Center's Executive Director, our friend Dr. Jacquelyn Kinder is retiring in 2004. As the University searches for a new Executive Director, SHAC has been asked to represent the student body by participating in the screening and selection of applicants.
